Quick Pick

In return for editorial consideration, Paka Apparel sent me The Hoodie from their product lineup. Although I’m selective in the products I choose to review, I couldn’t wait to write up this Paka Apparel The Hoodie sweater because it’s a delightful addition to my wardrobe. Plus, the company’s mission aligns with those of Top Eco Deals!

Peruvian from Start to Finish

One of my favorite things about this company is its dedication to keeping the complete supply chain in Peru. Founder Kris Cody fell in love with the country, the people, and alpaca wool on an extended trip, an experience that lead to the formation of Paka Apparel. To connect with the source of the wool, he hiked into the Andes mountains, met the local farmers, and spent time with the animals.

Why Paka Apparel is Sustainable

Let’s face it, all products leave a footprint. However, alpaca footprints are much less impactful than other types of wool sources. That’s both a figurative and literal statement because alpaca actually have two-toed padded feet instead of hooves, which means they tread lightly on the soil and, unlike sheep, don’t contribute to soil erosion.

The eating habits of alpaca also positively benefits the planet. Unlike sheep and goats, who tear plants out by the roots, alpaca nibble only the top of the plant, leaving behind food for other animals and allowing Earth to quickly regenerate the supply.

Perhaps the premiere reason alpaca is a superior choice stems from the fact that a single shearing provides enough wool for four Paka sweaters. On the other hand, it requires wool from four sheep to make a single sweater. One animal=four sweaters or four animals=one sweater? That’s easy math.

Paka Apparel Beyond the Animals

The indigenous peoples of the Andes have a long-standing relationship with the alpaca. In fact, watching over them is a way of life for the 86,000 families that care for them in small groups of 60-80 animals. Alpaca roam free and caretakers shave the wool one to two times each year. After shaving, the material is sorted and spun into yarn. From there, skilled local artisans weave the yarn into Paka sweaters and other clothing.

Paka partners with the Ministry of Vulnerable Populations, an organization that provides training and other support for women affected by domestic violence. Once they learn the skills involved in weaving, the women earn a living wage in alignment with Fair Trade criteria so they can contribute to the family and care for their children. Paka also donates to organizations that support education for Peruvian women, and 1% of all sales goes towards improving the livelihoods of the farmers in Peru and regenerative alpaca practices.

In addition, Paka Apparel is a Certified B Corp that has earned Best For The World in 2021 and 2022.

Paka Apparel The Hoodie Sweater

It’s not much of a surprise that I love this sweater. Honestly, I’m glad the weather has cooled so I can wear it more often. I did have the opportunity to break it in while in Switzerland in early October. Although the weather was still sunny and warm, mornings and evenings were brisk enough to toss on a sweater. This is light enough to pack easily and it’s the only sweater I needed over the four days I was there.

Since being home, I’ve worn it numerous times, around the house, to the store, to appointments, and by the outdoor fire in the evening. Let’s be honest. I’m a freelance writer who often falls into the stereotype of wearing the same clothes for days on end, often skipping a shower here and there. After a month of wearing this sweater almost daily, it still didn’t pick up odors–even in the armpits. I did finally wash it after dribbling food on the front. It washed nicely and is ready for the next round of frequent usage.

The Feel and Fit of Paka’s The Hoodie

The Hoodie is actually made from 65% Royal Alpaca Fiber and 35% Recycled Nylon. The feel is soft enough to wear without anything underneath. Because of the loose fit, it easily allows for layering. These sweatshirts are unisex sizing, so you may want to go a size smaller. For reference, I’m 5’6″, 145 pounds, with 36D bust and weight in the midsection. The medium is loose on me (which I love). I’ve worn it with t-shirts, tanks, and long-sleeve tees beneath it and the cut still allows unrestricted movement. It offers great coverage past the wrists and sits below the waistline. The V-neck collar offers breathability and comfort when taking it on and off.

Other Features

The stitching is wonderful, including nice touches like the Paka tag and the signature of the weaver who made my garment. Thanks Gloria! Stretchy panels down the sides are a nice touch and the hood is also a cozy treat. Note that in addition to the loose fit and delightfully long sleeves, the hood is gappy around the ears, rather than providing a snug fit. However, it stays up without holding it in place or worrying about it blowing off.

Paka’s The Hoodie sweaters are available in sizes XXS thru XXL. Choose between four colorways including charcoal, light grey, oat, and eucalyptus. Paka also has a variety of other clothing and accessories to consider.
