Nuttch says, “We want to bring the fashion industry back to its roots: putting quality, design, sustainability and fair production first.” It’s an honorable mission in an industry known for its devastating effects on the health of the planet. Nuttch offers a streamlined selection of athletic and leisurewear that includes bras, underwear, shorts, and leggings for women. This family-owned business describes itself as “passionate individuals who want to create a clothing and underwear brand that does not compromise on fabrics, ethical production, environmental impact, or people and animal exploitation.” Let’s look at some of the ways Nuttch accomplishes these goals.

Nuttch is Proudly Produced in Italy

Rather than hopscotching materials around the globe, Nuttch centers the knitting and sewing factory, yarn manufacturer, dying and laundry facility, and packaging manufacturing supplier all in the Lombardy region of Italy. That means, start to finish, Nuttch apparel is Italian made.

The Nuttch Supply Chain Has Earned Myriad Certifications

Up and down the supply chain, certifications recognize clean material and process selections. For example, the yarn manufacturer is EU Eco Label Certified as a result of using factory scraps to create recycled nylon and working within the guidelines for environmentally-friendly manufacturing systems. Furthermore, the company voluntarily registered with the Italian TF traceability system so customers can ensure clean product origins and ethical production practices.

Throughout material selection, manufacturing, and packaging you’ll see certifications such as Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX®, Global Recycled Standard (GRS), Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), EuPIA Compliance, EU Eco Label, and Higg Index Partner.

Other Sustainable Actions

The yarn manufacturing factory is just one example. Nuttch athleticwear also focuses on water conservation, filtration, and recycling during production. Some factories have also invested in renewable energy and highly energy efficient machinery. Across the supply chain, there is a strong emphasis on waste reduction and minimal chemical usage. As one example of this effort, all packaging is made using recycled cardboard that is paired with water-based inks.

Although we aren’t fond of labels containing nylon, Nuttch products use yarn that diverts fabric scraps from the landfill. Factories within the same region, where the rest of the manufacturing process takes place, collect this industrial waste nylon. Waste goes through a tedious selection process since not all mixed-material fabrics are suitable for recycling.

Personal Review of Nuttch Athletic (or Leisure) Wear

Upon request, the company sent the EcoRibb™ Scoop Neck Bra and the EcoRibb™ Leggings and High Neck Bra Set. I’ve had the opportunity to wear all items extensively over the past week.

The two bras are basically the same design. The only difference is where the neckline hits on the chest. The Scoop Neck Bra has about the same coverage as most sports bras. There’s no risk of excessive cleavage, even for larger breasts.

My favorite feature of The High Neck Bra is that it brings the neckline up to the collar bone. Rather than using it to workout, I leave the upper half exposed as a base layer. Beneath a quarter-zip sweatshirt, v-neck, or zipped hoodie, no one would know it’s a bra. I wish I had had this bra on my recent trip to Italy when it was hot and I instead wore a full tank layer.

Both bras are breathable and flexible. They are comfortable beneath any type of clothing. I’ve found the height of the arm cutouts delightfully effective in avoiding ‘side boob’ and the lower band is tight enough to discourage bottom fallout as well.

I must say I had my doubts when I first opened the package. These bras look like they would be too small for my daughter, let alone my 50+ year old body with a 36D package to contain. However, my hesitation was unwarranted. Both bras are incredibly comfortable, with stretchy material that somehow holds it all in without being restrictive.

I love that I’m not battling the breast pads included in many sports bras. This simple design allows me to wear them for my workout, walks, daily errands, and even a night out. They don’t dig, fold, poke, gap, or pinch. However, I do recommend removing after a workout since the lower band can be uncomfortable when wet (like all bras).

The ribbed leggings sat unused for several days. Honestly, I was scared I would have to fast in order to get them on. Again, my judgment was flawed. These leggings are amazingly soft. They feel like fleece-lined leggings without the bulk or heat. They offer a generous length all the way down to the ankle, but can be worn shorter. The legs stay in place without twisting and there’s no crotch sagging like I’ve found in other brands. The legging hit high on the waist, well above the hip bone. This leaves only a small gap between the leggings and the bottom of the bra.

Paired with the High Neck Bra, I feel acceptably dressed where I otherwise wouldn’t dream of walking around my home in just a bra. My only complaint about the leggings is they do have a tendency to slip down or roll on the waist. This is another common trait of leggings and yoga pants, especially with my middle-aged waist fluff. However, even with this small inconvenience, they offer great coverage on the backside and breathability everywhere. Plus, they don’t dig into my waist or side. Thank you.

Note that although they are soft and cozy, the breathability allows cold air to seep right through, so while they might make a decent base layer, they’re not ideal for leisurely walks on a brisk day.

I found the sizing charts to be accurate for all items. However, if you have an issue Nuttch does offer a limited 30-day return policy.
